This fact might be hard to believe, but there\u2019s no denying it: Anti-vaccine sentiments are likely to play a key role in this year\u2019s election. President Biden<\/a> is fending off challenges from not one but two opponents regularly spouting anti-vaccine messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump<\/a>, the presumptive Republican nominee, has repeatedly declared<\/a> in campaign speeches that he \u201cwill not give one penny to any school that has a vaccine mandate,\u201d even though all 50 states<\/a> require specific vaccines for students. These regulations have been key to the United States\u2019 successful near-elimination of measles<\/a> and polio<\/a> and to preventing countless outbreaks of chickenpox, rotavirus and whooping cough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there\u2019s\u00a0Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a>, who\u2019s running as an independent and has much as\u00a021 percent<\/a>\u00a0support in some polling. He has\u00a0an unenviable history of anti-vaccine advocacy<\/a>, including peddling\u00a0debunked claims<\/a>\u00a0linking vaccines to autism and\u00a0leading an anti-vaccine group<\/a>. He claims he is not opposed to vaccines, though that\u2019s hard to square with his\u00a0recent comments<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthere\u2019s no vaccine that is safe and effective\u201d and \u201cI see somebody on a hiking trail carrying a little baby, and I say to him, better not get them vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
