Here\u2019s what to know about bird flu, its symptoms and treatment, and its risk to humans and pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is bird flu?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/avianflu\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Avian influenza<\/a>\u00a0is a disease caused by influenza A viruses that spread widely among wild birds,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/06\/08\/ducks-deadly-avian-flu-mall\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">particularly aquatic birds<\/a>, birds of prey and waterfowl, but also domestic birds such as poultry. In the United States, highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in more than 9,000wild birds and affected more than 82 million commercial poultry and backyard flocks since early 2022,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/avianflu\/avian-flu-summary.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to data<\/a>\u00a0from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the World Organization for Animal Health, avian influenza viruses can survive for long periods in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2024\/02\/27\/bird-flu-antarctica-first-cases\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cold temperatures<\/a>&nbsp;on surfaces such as farm equipment, which allows them to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.woah.org\/en\/disease\/avian-influenza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spread from farm to farm<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can humans catch bird flu?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is rare, but humans can become infected with bird flu if they come into close contact with infected birds \u2014 whether the birds are dead or alive \u2014 or with surfaces that may have been contaminated by an infected bird\u2019s saliva or feces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2024\/04\/02\/bird-flu-avian-influenza-explained\/\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"Qeb LCkjQ   UYhc\"><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Post How it spreads, the symptoms and more.
