In March 2020, schools closed, employers sent staff to work from home, and grocery stores called for physical distancing to keep people safe. But little halted the flow of misleading claims that sent fact-checkers and public health officials into overdrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2021\/dec\/21\/blog-posting\/no-5g-technology-does-not-cause-covid-19-symptoms\/\">falsely\u00a0asserted<\/a>\u00a0covid\u2019s symptoms were associated with 5G wireless technology. Faux cures and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2020\/may\/19\/facebook-posts\/hydroxychloroquine-not-proven-treat-covid-19-or-ra\/\">untested treatments<\/a>\u00a0populated social media and political discourse. Amid uncertainty about the virus\u2019s origins, some people\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2020\/mar\/19\/facebook-posts\/facebook-users-are-claiming-there-no-coronavirus-s\/\">proclaimed\u00a0covid didn\u2019t exist<\/a>\u00a0at all.
