{"id":6348,"date":"2024-04-16T21:36:34","date_gmt":"2024-04-17T02:36:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=6348"},"modified":"2024-04-16T21:36:39","modified_gmt":"2024-04-17T02:36:39","slug":"why-some-adults-may-need-another-dose-of-measles-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/04\/16\/why-some-adults-may-need-another-dose-of-measles-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"Why some adults may need another dose of measles vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/health-news\/why-some-adults-may-need-another-dose-of-measles-vaccine\/Q3OITMRBOVHTTJ4BHRLMBY5NSE\/\">Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rising number of measles cases in the U.S. this yearis raising concerns over a comeback of a disease that was declared eliminated in this country 24 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7314a1.htm?s_cid=mm7314a1_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A measles report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week<\/a>\u00a0concluded that the spike in cases means more public health efforts are needed to increase routine vaccination coverage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year there&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/cases-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have been 121 infections reported in 17 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. That is well above the total of 58 cases documented for the country for all of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the national cases this year were three in Georgia, all of them in unvaccinated people. The latest was confirmed Thursday in a person traveling with an international group of students. Earlier this year, state health officials confirmed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/health-news\/georgia-health-officials-report-second-measles-case-in-state\/MQB466NQVVHEVEQQW26I2RTT2U\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two cases of measles in a metro Atlanta family<\/a>&nbsp;after one of the family members had traveled internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before this year, the last measles cases in Georgia were reported in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the numbers might seem low, measles is a serious illness that can lead to severe complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The airborne virus is also highly contagious.
