{"id":6403,"date":"2024-04-23T19:55:30","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T00:55:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=6403"},"modified":"2024-04-23T19:55:33","modified_gmt":"2024-04-24T00:55:33","slug":"usda-releases-h5n1-bird-flu-genetic-data-eagerly-awaited-by-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/04\/23\/usda-releases-h5n1-bird-flu-genetic-data-eagerly-awaited-by-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"USDA releases H5N1 bird flu genetic data eagerly awaited by scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2024\/04\/21\/usda-releases-h5n1-bird-flu-genetic-data-eagerly-awaited-by-scientists\/\">STAT Helen Branswell<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which has been under pressure from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2024\/04\/18\/h5n1-bird-flu-scientists-want-usda-genetic-data-faster\/\">scientists both at home and abroad<\/a>\u00a0to share more data on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2024\/04\/03\/h5n1-bird-flu-in-cows-risk-to-humans\/\">H5N1 bird flu outbreaks<\/a>\u00a0in dairy cows, uploaded a large number of genetic sequences of the pathogen late Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The excitement that news generated in the scientific community quickly gave way to frustration, though, when researchers who tried to start analyzing the sequences realized the files did not include any information about when the samples that generated the data were collected, or where.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expectation that the sequence data could help determine if the H5N1 virus has been changing as it transmitted from cow to cow and herd to herd gave way to a realization that it would do nothing of the sort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe sequences \u2014 they just all look like the [original] Texas sequences,\u201d said Tom Peacock, a flu virologist at Imperial College, London. \u201cFor all we know, they are all the [original] Texas sequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe only date information is 2024.
