{"id":6462,"date":"2024-04-30T14:51:28","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T19:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=6462"},"modified":"2024-04-30T14:51:33","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T19:51:33","slug":"after-steady-decline-tb-has-increased-every-year-since-2020-in-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/04\/30\/after-steady-decline-tb-has-increased-every-year-since-2020-in-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"After steady decline, TB has increased every year since 2020 in U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2024\/04\/29\/tuberculosis-cases-increase-united-states\/\">Washington Post<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After decreasing for 27 years, the number of U.S. residents with tuberculosis has increased every year since 2020, with 9,615 cases recorded last year in the 50 states and D.C.,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7312a4.htm?s_cid=mm7312a4_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The finding was based on data from the agency\u2019s National Tuberculosis Surveillance System, which collects information from state and local health departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caused by bacteria,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/tuberculosis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tuberculosis<\/a>&nbsp;usually attacks the lungs and spreads easily from person to person through the air. People who have the disease can spread the bacteria when they cough, sneeze or simply talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although TB symptoms can include a cough, chest pain, fever and weakness, many people who have been infected develop what is called a latent TB infection. That means they have TB germs in their body and may need to take antibiotics, but those germs do not make them sick and they cannot spread TB to others unless the infection becomes active \u2014 which can happen if the person\u2019s immune system becomes weak. The latest numbers reflect a 16 percent increase in U.S. tuberculosis cases from 2022 to 2023, and the highest number of TB cases in the country since 2013, the CDC report says.
