{"id":6672,"date":"2024-05-28T08:58:24","date_gmt":"2024-05-28T13:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=6672"},"modified":"2024-05-28T08:58:29","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T13:58:29","slug":"scientists-developing-mrna-based-vaccine-against-h5n1-bird-flu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/05\/28\/scientists-developing-mrna-based-vaccine-against-h5n1-bird-flu\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Developing mRNA-Based Vaccine Against H5N1 Bird Flu"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/health-news\/articles\/2024-05-28\/scientists-developing-mrna-based-vaccine-against-h5n1-bird-flu\">US News<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An experimental mRNA vaccine against the H5N1 avian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/a-to-z-health\/pulmonology\/influenza-2665039558.html\">flu<\/a>&nbsp;is highly effective in preventing severe illness and death in lab animals, researchers report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vaccine could help fight the H5N1 bird flu outbreaks now spreading in wild birds, poultry and cows in the United States, researchers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stopping those outbreaks is key to preventing the H5N1 flu from leaping into humans, researchers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vaccine was created using the same techniques that produced the COVID vaccines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe mRNA technology allows us to be much more agile in developing vaccines; we can start creating a mRNA vaccine within hours of sequencing a new viral strain with pandemic potential,\u201d said senior researcher&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.upenn.edu\/apps\/faculty\/index.php\/g275\/p27057\">Scott Hensley<\/a>, a professor of microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania&#8217;s Perelman School of Medicine, in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring previous influenza pandemics, like the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, vaccines were difficult to manufacture and did not become available until after the initial pandemic waves subsided,\u201d Hensley added in a university news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most flu vaccines are developed using eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts inject fertilized chicken eggs with flu strains they expect will be the most dominant and virulent and let it replicate. They then inactivate the virus to use in flu shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it can take up to six months for viruses to be adapted to replicate in fertilized eggs, delaying production past the critical first few months of a pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore 2020, experts thought the influenza virus posed the greatest risk of causing a pandemic, and we had limited options for creating a vaccine if that had happened,\u201d said researcher&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.upenn.edu\/weissmanlab\/faculty.html\">Dr. Drew Weissman<\/a>, director of vaccine research at Penn Medicine.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US News An experimental mRNA vaccine against the H5N1 avian&nbsp;flu&nbsp;is highly effective in preventing severe illness and death in lab animals, researchers report.
