{"id":6759,"date":"2024-06-05T11:20:38","date_gmt":"2024-06-05T16:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=6759"},"modified":"2024-06-05T11:20:43","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T16:20:43","slug":"new-report-underscores-the-seriousness-of-long-covid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/06\/05\/new-report-underscores-the-seriousness-of-long-covid\/","title":{"rendered":"New Report Underscores the Seriousness of Long Covid"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p id=\"article-summary\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/05\/health\/long-covid-symptoms-recovery.html\">NYT<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"article-summary\">The National Academies said the condition could involve up to 200 symptoms, make it difficult for people to work and last for months or years.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the nation\u2019s premier medical advisory organizations has weighed in on long Covid with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/catalog\/27756\/long-term-health-effects-of-covid-19-disability-and-function\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 265-page report<\/a>&nbsp;that recognizes the seriousness and persistence of the condition for millions of Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than four years since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, long Covid continues to damage many people\u2019s ability to function, according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, a nongovernmental institution that advises federal agencies on science and medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLong Covid can impact people across the life span, from children to older adults, as well as across sex, gender, racial, ethnic and other demographic groups,\u201d it said, concluding that \u201clong Covid is associated with a wide range of new or worsening health conditions and encompasses more than 200 symptoms involving nearly every organ system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the National Academies\u2019 findings, drafted by a committee of 14 doctors and researchers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-4e92f15\">How many people have long Covid?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The report cited data from 2022 suggesting that nearly 18 million adults and nearly a million children in the United States have had long Covid at some point.
