{"id":6822,"date":"2024-06-12T09:15:02","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T14:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=6822"},"modified":"2024-06-12T09:15:06","modified_gmt":"2024-06-12T14:15:06","slug":"mosquitoes-with-west-nile-virus-surround-las-vegas-in-record-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/06\/12\/mosquitoes-with-west-nile-virus-surround-las-vegas-in-record-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Mosquitoes With West Nile Virus Surround Las Vegas in Record Numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6987295\/mosquitoes-west-nile-virus-nevada-las-vegas-record\/\">Time<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people may want to put their summer vacation plans to the Las Vegas area on hold, after health officials reported that Southern\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/tag\/nevada\/\">Nevada<\/a>\u00a0is experiencing the highest level of mosquito activity in known history, with more than 3,000 mosquitoes testing positive for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3973465\/theres-a-new-way-to-predict-west-nile-virus-outbreaks\/\">West Nile virus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southern Nevada Health District said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org\/news-release\/411465-2\/\">press release<\/a>\u00a0Monday that as of June 6, 91 pools, comprising 3,081\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/tag\/mosquito\/\">mosquitoes<\/a>\u00a0from 16 ZIP codes, have tested positive for the virus. Two pools, comprising 46 mosquitoes from two ZIP codes, have also tested positive for the virus that causes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sle\/about\/index.html\">St. Louis encephalitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The health district\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org\/programs\/mosquito-surveillance\/\">Mosquito Surveillance Program<\/a>&nbsp;has received an increased number of complaints from residents about mosquito activity, according to the press release. Health officials attributed the rise in reports partly to the increased presence of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the area\u2014these mosquitoes are aggressive biters during the day and tend to bite people rather than birds. Aedes aegypti have tested positive for West Nile virus for the first time in Clark County, the press release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the past four years, Southern Nevada has had minimal West Nile virus activity, health officials said. Only two human cases of the virus were reported in 2023.
