Here&#8217;s what to know."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bird-flu-milk-pasteurization-nih-study\/\">CBS News<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A &#8220;small but detectable quantity&#8221; of infectious&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bird-flu-risk-to-humans-jon-lapook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H5N1 bird flu<\/a>&nbsp;virus was able to survive a common approach to pasteurizing milk, according to new research co-authored by scientists at the National Institutes of Health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMc2405488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a>\u00a0Friday in The New England Journal of Medicine, were based on experiments run at the agency&#8217;s lab. The researchers note this is not the same as finding infectious H5N1 virus in milk from grocery stores.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, officials have not detected infectious virus in any supermarket milk samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The finding comes as authorities are still identifying&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/livestock-poultry-disease\/avian\/avian-influenza\/hpai-detections\/livestock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new infected herds<\/a>&nbsp;in this year&#8217;s unprecedented outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in dairy cattle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infections have been detected in cows across farms in at least a dozen states, with most of the positive tests coming from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cats-died-after-drinking-milk-bird-flu-infected-cows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raw milk<\/a>&nbsp;samples that were teeming with the virus.
