This latest case, involving a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2024\/05\/30\/bird-flu-third-case-human-infection-caused-respiratory-symptoms\/\">dairy worker in Michigan<\/a>, raises concerns due to the individual exhibiting respiratory symptoms, highlighting the pandemic potential of this virus. U.S. hospitals need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three human cases of H5N1 in the U.S. \u2014 the first one in Texas and the others in Michigan \u2014 are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2024\/p0530-h5-human-case-michigan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not connected<\/a>&nbsp;to each other. Fortunately, all three individuals experienced mild symptoms and have fully recovered, with no additional cases detected. These infections are part of a broader epidemic affecting dairy cattle, with more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/livestock-poultry-disease\/avian\/avian-influenza\/hpai-detections\/livestock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">90 herds infected across 12 states<\/a>. Wastewater surveillance has shown&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2024\/05\/13\/cdc-wastewater-surveillance-dashboard-bird-flu-outbreak-monitor\/\">increased detections<\/a>&nbsp;of influenza A in certain areas. Bird flu is in the family of influenza A so any increase observed can be implicated with H5N1 or other influenza A viruses, such as H1N1 and H3N2 that routinely circulate in people.
