{"id":7000,"date":"2024-07-10T11:45:49","date_gmt":"2024-07-10T16:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=7000"},"modified":"2024-07-24T12:45:15","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T17:45:15","slug":"more-understanding-needed-on-hpai-spread-in-wild-birds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/07\/10\/more-understanding-needed-on-hpai-spread-in-wild-birds\/","title":{"rendered":"More understanding needed on HPAI spread in wild birds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wattagnet.com\/poultry-meat\/diseases-health\/avian-influenza\/article\/15679214\/more-understanding-needed-on-hpai-spread-in-wild-birds\">Watt Poultry<\/a> The spread of avian influenza by wild birds is affected by migration pattern and species, however, more research is needed to understand the impact of the virus on wild bird populations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nature of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wattagnet.com\/poultry-meat\/diseases-health\/avian-influenza\/article\/15536868\/wild-bird-control-programs-should-be-elevated-on-the-farm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wild bird<\/a>&nbsp;species and their behaviors should drive the poultry industry\u2019s understanding of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wattagnet.com\/poultry-meat\/diseases-health\/avian-influenza\/article\/15669050\/the-real-cost-to-poultry-growers-of-hpai-is-downtime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)<\/a>&nbsp;viruses, a subtype of influenza A viruses, in wild bird populations, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twin-cities.umn.edu\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Minnesota&nbsp;<\/a>Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Professor Dr. Carol Cardona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMigration is a critical avian behavior for influenza ecology,\u201d she stated during the<a href=\"https:\/\/cast-science.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0Council for Agricultural Science and Technology\u2019s (CAST)<\/a>\u00a0webinar titled \u201cHPAI and Its Impact on Food Production Industries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During migration, groups of birds are constructed, deconstructed and reconstructed, Cardona explained. Birds come together into groups for breeding before migrations begins.
