{"id":7047,"date":"2024-07-17T06:51:35","date_gmt":"2024-07-17T11:51:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=7047"},"modified":"2024-07-24T12:43:42","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T17:43:42","slug":"six-colorado-workers-contracted-bird-flu-the-most-human-cases-in-a-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/07\/17\/six-colorado-workers-contracted-bird-flu-the-most-human-cases-in-a-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Six Colorado workers contracted bird flu, the most human cases in a state"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2024\/07\/16\/bird-flu-colorado-poultry-cow\/\">Washington Post<\/a> Excessive heat made it hard for poultry workers to wear goggles and masks while culling chickens on a farm with an H5N1 outbreak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird flu has infected six farmworkers in Colorado this month \u2014 the most in any state \u2014 as health officials stressed the importance of preparedness to contain the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2024\/04\/02\/bird-flu-avian-influenza-explained\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;H5N1 virus&nbsp;<\/a>spreading in dairy herds and poultry flocks across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdphe.colorado.gov\/press-release\/health-officials-confirm-human-cases-of-avian-flu-in-colorado-poultry-workers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Five of the workers<\/a>&nbsp;were culling poultry at the same commercial egg-laying farm experiencing an outbreakaffecting nearly 2 million chickens, according to Colorado officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a news briefing Tuesday, federal officials said temperatures soaring above 104 degrees made it difficult for workers to wear the required full-body suits, goggles and N95 masks to protect them from the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe barns in which the culling operations occur were no doubt even hotter,\u201d said Nirav Shah, principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Large-scale industrial fans were used to help cool the barns, but they also spread feathers around, which are known to carry virus, he said.
