Salon<\/a> COVID could be a staple of summer, experts say. t\u2019s not only a so-called \u201cbrat summer,\u201d<\/a> 2024 is also turning out to be a FLiRT summer \u2014 as in the collection of COVID-19 variants driving the latest summer wave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on wastewater sample data, the\u00a0Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention<\/a>\u00a0reports that COVID levels have increased in most states nationwide. In fact, nationally the CDC labels wastewater viral activity level for COVID is currently labeled as \u201chigh,\u201d with the Western and Southern regions displaying the most alarming levels of activity.\u00a0Wastewater testing<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 or collecting samples of pathogens in our feces \u2014 is the current standard to monitor the national and regional spread of\u00a0COVID<\/a>. According to the CDC, the summer started with a steady decline in cases caused by the JN.1 variant. But now, KP.3, KP.3.1.1., and KP.2, known as the \u201cFLiRT variants\u201d have increased.
