A doctor explains what to know and how to stay safe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/health-fitness\/2024\/08\/why-is-covid-surging-a-doctor-explains-what-to-know-and-how-to-stay-safe\/\">WTOP<\/a> It\u2019s not just President Biden who recently&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/biden-tests-positive-covid-what-we-know-diagnosis-treatment\/?ftag=\">tested positive for COVID<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 cases of the virus are<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-trend-high-western-us-cdc-data\/?ftag=\">&nbsp;spiking across the country.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/map-covid-levels-states-summer-2024\/?ftag=\">Nearly 40 states<\/a>&nbsp;are reporting high COVID activity levels, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#datatracker-home\">emergency room visits<\/a>&nbsp;are at their highest for the virus since February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why the seemingly sudden summer surge? There are a couple of factors at play, Dr. C\u00e9line Gounder, CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/covid-cases-spike-across-us\/?ftag=\">\u201cCBS Mornings\u201d Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne, the virus continues to evolve to stay ahead of our immune systems. That\u2019s what we can talk about when we\u2019re talking about variants,\u201d she said. \u201cTwo, your immunity to infection only lasts about three months. Your immunity to severe disease, hospitalization and death, that lasts much longer, which is why people are not getting sick the way they were early in the pandemic.
