Field trials have seen uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying over Fiji, dropping hundreds of mosquitoes infected with bacteria that stop them from spreading diseases like dengue among the human population. Dengue is a viral disease that is spread by the bite of the&nbsp;<em>Aedes aegypti&nbsp;<\/em>mosquito. Around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/dengue\/areas-with-risk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">half<\/a>&nbsp;of the world\u2019s population live in areas with a high risk of dengue transmission. Cases this year have been surging, with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paho.org\/en\/documents\/situation-report-no-28-dengue-epidemiological-situation-region-americas-epidemiological\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reporting<\/a>&nbsp;an increase of 233 percent in the first 28 weeks of 2024 compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/dengue\/about\/index.html#cdc_disease_basics_treatment-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no specific treatments<\/a>\u00a0for dengue.
