We asked experts about the right time for a booster. Patients keep asking Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, the same question: Is it time to get another Covid shot?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virus is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/03\/well\/live\/covid-symptoms-treatment-flirt-variants.html\">circulating at high levels<\/a>&nbsp;across the country. That might suggest it\u2019s prime time for another dose of protection. But updated vaccines that target&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/27\/health\/covid-vaccines-seniors-children.html\">newer variants of the virus<\/a>&nbsp;are expected to arrive this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts said the right time for your next Covid shot will depend on your health status and what you\u2019re hoping to get from the vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-4f981f7f\">If you\u2019re trying to get the most protection against the leading variants:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors say that many people may want to wait for the updated vaccines, which have been retooled to better protect against the current dominant strains of the virus.
