It was thought he had a bacterial infection, or had been infected with a tick-borne disease, until a blood test showed he was \u201cstrongly positive\u201d for West Nile virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fauci, 83, told STAT he has never been so ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really felt like I\u2019d been hit by a truck,\u201d he said in an interview Saturday. \u201cI have to tell you, I\u2019ve never been as sick in my life. Ever. By far, this is the worst I\u2019ve ever been with an illness.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2024\/08\/24\/what-you-need-to-know-about-west-nile-virus\/\">West Nile virus<\/a>&nbsp;is a flavivirus, a viral family that includes St. Louis encephalitis virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, and Powassan virus. There is no vaccine to protect against it, and no specific antiviral drugs to treat it. Severe cases can be treated with supportive care \u2014 intravenous fluids and pain medications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is spread by infected mosquitoes and is the leading cause of mosquito-borne illness in the United States.
