The virus, formerly known as monkeypox, is spreading quickly in parts of Africa, particularly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/23\/health\/mpox-vaccines-who-africa.html\">the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/a>&nbsp;The outbreak there has been fueled by a new version of the virus that has also been discovered in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/16\/world\/europe\/mpox-cases-sweden-europe.html\">Sweden<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/22\/world\/asia\/thailand-mpox.html\">Thailand.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fast-evolving situation has led to anxiety and confusion about who is at risk of infection, and how the virus spreads. \u201cI can understand why there\u2019s concern,\u201d said Dr. Taimur Khan, associate medical research director at Fenway Health, a medical center in Boston. But, he added, \u201cit\u2019s not like we\u2019re being caught off guard in the same way that we were with Covid-19.
