While early genetic analyses pointed to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/d41586-021-02596-2\">horseshoe bats<\/a>&nbsp;as the evolutionary hosts of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, no reports had yet surfaced indicating it could be transmitted from humans to other animal species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less than two weeks later, a report from Belgium marked the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/can-cats-really-get-or-pass-on-covid-19-as-a-report-from-belgium-suggests-135007\">first infection in a domestic cat<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 presumably by its owner. Summer 2020 saw news of COVID-19 outbreaks and subsequent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/nov\/14\/ghost-farms-the-mink-sheds-abandoned-to-the-pandemic\">cullings in<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.abd2483\">mink farms<\/a>\u00a0across Europe and fears of similar calls for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/science\/2020\/11\/30\/mink-coronavirus-oregon\/\">culling in North America<\/a>. Humans and other animals on and around mink farms tested positive, raising questions about the potential for a secondary wildlife reservoir of COVID-19.
