{"id":7603,"date":"2024-09-11T10:03:01","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T15:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=7603"},"modified":"2024-09-11T10:03:05","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T15:03:05","slug":"covid-more-severe-longer-lasting-than-other-respiratory-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/09\/11\/covid-more-severe-longer-lasting-than-other-respiratory-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID more severe, longer-lasting than other respiratory diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/covid-19\/new-report-covid-more-severe-longer-lasting-other-respiratory-diseases\">CIDRAP<\/a> Healthcare workers (HCWs) with COVID-19 had more severe symptoms that lasted longer than those with other respiratory diseases, and a higher proportion met the World Health Organization (WHO) or&nbsp;UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)&nbsp;definitions of long COVID, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalofinfection.com\/article\/S0163-4453(24)00201-9\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>&nbsp;published in&nbsp;<em>Viruses and Viral Diseases<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team led by Murdoch Children&#8217;s Research Institute investigators in Parkville, Australia, also identified older age, chronic respiratory disease, and pre-existing symptoms as risk factors for long COVID, also known as post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data from phase 3 clinical trial<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers analyzed data on long-COVID symptoms, duration, and pre-existing symptoms from the multinational randomized controlled trial (RCT) BRACE trial on HCWs diagnosed as having COVID-19 or another respiratory illness for 1 year after diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants were tested for COVID-19 infection if they reported symptoms, gave blood samples every 3 months for evaluation for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, and completed quarterly surveys.
