News reports and murmurs among fellow veterinarians revealed livestock herds about 1,000 miles away in Kansas had fallen ill with a confusing new ailment. In the 35 years he\u2019s been treating animals across southeast Idaho, Geary had never heard of anything like it. Nor did he think he\u2019d soon be at the center of an outbreak that threatened national, even global, consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after, highly pathogenic avian influenza \u2014 colloquially known as bird flu \u2014 was confirmed for the first time in dairy cows from New Mexico, Texas and Kansas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my mind, I was thinking, \u2018Well, I sure hope that they can contain it,\u2019\u201d Geary says.
