{"id":7728,"date":"2024-10-01T13:51:37","date_gmt":"2024-10-01T18:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=7728"},"modified":"2024-10-01T13:51:40","modified_gmt":"2024-10-01T18:51:40","slug":"rwanda-is-dealing-with-its-first-outbreak-of-deadly-marburg-virus-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/10\/01\/rwanda-is-dealing-with-its-first-outbreak-of-deadly-marburg-virus-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda is dealing with its first outbreak of deadly Marburg virus disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/30\/health\/marburg-virus-rwanda-outbreak-disease\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> For the first time in Rwanda\u2019s history, its health ministry is dealing with an outbreak of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/29\/health\/marburg-ebola-virus-africa-health-wellness\/\">Marburg virus disease<\/a>, a rare but deadly hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola \u2013 but unlike Ebola, there is no treatment&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/marburg-vaccine-shows-promising-results-first-human-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">or vaccines<\/a>&nbsp;for Marburg, and it has a fatality rate of 88%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, 26 people have gotten sick, 18 are in treatment and eight people have died in the outbreak, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RwandaHealth\/status\/1840459338563162430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the health ministry.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to sending medical supplies, the World Health Organization said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/rwanda\/news\/rwanda-reports-first-ever-marburg-virus-disease-outbreak-26-cases-confirmed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over the weekend<\/a>\u00a0that it is deploying a team of seven global experts in hemorrhagic disease to Rwanda who can provide guidance for public health experts on the ground.
