Health officials must step up their game in tracking and preparing for this virus before it spreads further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2024\/s0906-birdflu-case-missouri.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirmed<\/a>\u00a0a case of the illness, also known as H5N1, in a Missouri resident. This was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/situation-summary\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the 14th human case<\/a>\u00a0in the United States in 2024 and the 15th since the current outbreak began. Unlike previous cases and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2024\/10\/03\/california-human-bird-flu-h5n1-dairy-worker\/bbcab5c8-81d3-11ef-90f2-d1fc6303655d_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two others<\/a>\u00a0that have since been reported in California,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2024\/05\/23\/bird-flu-human-case-questions-concerns\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all of which involved people<\/a>\u00a0working closely with infected poultry or dairy cows, the Missouri patient had no known animal exposure.
