Here&#8217;s what to know and how to help keep your family safe."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/whooping-cough-walking-pneumonia-cases-vaccines\/\">CBS News<\/a> Health officials are warning about the rise of multiple infections this season \u2014 especially among school-aged children \u2014 including whooping cough and walking pneumonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/whooping-cough-pertussis-back-to-school-surge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four times as many cases of whooping cough<\/a>&nbsp;this year compared to last year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/cdc-reports-alarming-increase-in-whooping-cough-and-walking-pneumonia-among-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On &#8220;CBS Mornings Plus&#8221; Tuesday<\/a>, CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook explained that whooping cough is especially dangerous because of the small airways of infants and young kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The reason why it&#8217;s called whooping cough \u2014 it&#8217;s a cough, cough, cough, cough, and then they gasp for air, that&#8217;s the whoop,&#8221; he said. &#8220;As an adult, when you get it, you may be sick, but probably going to be OK in terms of moving air in and out of your body.
