{"id":7990,"date":"2024-10-29T14:58:04","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T19:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=7990"},"modified":"2024-10-29T14:58:09","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T19:58:09","slug":"research-reveals-new-clues-to-the-mysteries-of-long-covid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/10\/29\/research-reveals-new-clues-to-the-mysteries-of-long-covid\/","title":{"rendered":"Research reveals new clues to the mysteries of long COVID"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/folio\/2024\/10\/research-reveals-new-clues-to-the-mysteries-of-long-covid.html\">University of Alberta<\/a> <strong>Three groundbreaking studies pinpoint immune cells and proteins linked with the lingering condition \u2014 and suggest a possible cause.<\/strong> Researchers at the University of Alberta have pinpointed two proteins that could serve as markers for identifying patients with long COVID \u2014 a discovery that may lead to treatments that will bring better quality of life for the millions of people suffering from the debilitating condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to find out more about what is going on with long COVID to bring relief to sufferers \u2014 especially those patients with the most debilitating symptoms, a condition called chronic fatigue syndrome, which leads to extreme tiredness and other disabling symptoms,\u201d says immunologist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.ualberta.ca\/directory\/person\/elahi\">Shokrollah Elahi<\/a>, a professor in the U of A\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/school-of-dentistry\/index.html\">Mike Petryk School of Dentistry<\/a>, who led three groundbreaking studies aimed at improving our understanding of how long COVID develops and who may be susceptible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people who get the SARS-CoV-2 infection feel sick for a week or two and then recover. But about 10 per cent end up with long-term complications that can linger for months or even years.
