This was something virologists had been worrying about ever since this highly pathogenic strain of bird flu started its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-08054-z\">rapid global spread in 2020<\/a>. But why were we worrying specifically about pigs? And does this case \u2013 detected on a farm in Oregon on October 29 \u2013 change anything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might seem odd that we care about it at all. In many ways, the initial reports of this case are \u2013 against the backdrop of a continuing viral outbreak that has devastated seabird colonies around the world, caused&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1477893924000267\">huge die-offs of sea lions<\/a>&nbsp;and led to the emergence of an entirely new disease of US dairy cattle \u2013 pretty innocuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we currently know is this: H5N1 bird flu infected poultry on a small American non-commercial farm, something which is sadly now quite common. In this case, there were other animals on the farm, including five pigs. Although the pigs appeared to be healthy,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/avian-influenza-bird-flu\/usda-announces-first-h5n1-avian-flu-detection-us-pigs\">a nasal swab<\/a>&nbsp;from one of them was found to contain H5N1.<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"sDOEFSZAYjRgkK  FX\"><!-- sDOEFSZAYjRgkK  FX --><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Conversation H5N1 influenza has now been&nbsp;detected in pigs.
