{"id":8035,"date":"2024-11-05T17:16:57","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T23:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=8035"},"modified":"2024-11-05T17:17:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T23:17:01","slug":"cdc-pertussis-case-reports-5-times-higher-than-at-this-time-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/11\/05\/cdc-pertussis-case-reports-5-times-higher-than-at-this-time-last-year\/","title":{"rendered":"CDC: Pertussis case reports 5 times higher than at this time last year"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2024\/11\/04\/pertussis-whooping-cough-infection-vaccination\/\">Washington Post<\/a> More than five times as many pertussis cases had been reported as of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pertussis\/php\/surveillance\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mid-October<\/a>&nbsp;compared with the same time last year, according to provisional numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pertussis, or whooping cough, is characterized by persistent, chronic fits of coughing followed by a \u201cwhoop\u201d sound, and is sometimes called the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/vaccineswork\/6-things-know-about-100-day-cough\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201c100-day cough.\u201d<\/a> Though rates of the illness had been low since the start of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coronavirus<\/a>&nbsp;pandemic, the number of reported cases this year \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wonder.cdc.gov\/nndss\/static\/2024\/42\/2024-42-table990-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almost 20,000<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 is similar to pre-pandemic levels. The CDC also says infection numbers are probably underestimated. There are diagnostic tests, but they are more reliable early in the illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antibiotics can be effective in treating the disease but should be given early on. By the time pertussis presents with a persistent cough, it can be too late to test for or treat.
