{"id":8047,"date":"2024-11-05T18:58:36","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T00:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=8047"},"modified":"2024-11-05T18:58:40","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T00:58:40","slug":"bird-flu-cases-may-be-spreading-from-cat-owners-to-their-pets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2024\/11\/05\/bird-flu-cases-may-be-spreading-from-cat-owners-to-their-pets\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird Flu Cases May be Spreading From Cat Owners to Their Pets"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/cat-owners-infecting-their-pets-bird-flu-officials-suspect-1979740\">Newsweek<\/a> Internal emails reveal Michigan health officials suspected that owners may have inadvertently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/bird-flu-outbreak-map-reveals-confirmed-us-human-cases-1976744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spread bird flu<\/a>\u00a0to their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/indoor-cat-escapes-realizes-not-made-outdoors-regret-1978770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">household cats<\/a>, raising new concerns about transmission patterns of the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If we only could have gotten testing on the [REDACTED] household members, their clothing if possible, and their workplaces, we may have been able to prove human-to-cat transmission,&#8221; officials wrote in a July 22 email obtained by KFF Health News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another email urged publishing a report &#8220;to inform others about the potential for indirect transmission to companion animals.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emails were obtained via record requests and document the ongoing struggle to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/first-us-case-bird-flu-detected-pigs-what-we-know-1977518\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">track cases of the H5N1 virus<\/a>\u00a0in cats.
