The zoo announced on\u00a0Dec. 10 that the African Aviary and South American Tropical Rainforest &amp; Aviary are closed to guests as \u201cextra precautionary measures due to the risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza.\u201d HPAI, known colloquially as the bird flu, is an\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/virus-transmission\/avian-in-birds.html\">avian virus<\/a>\u00a0found in wild aquatic birds like geese, gulls and ducks. It can spread to other birds, including domestic poultry, via saliva, feces and other secretions. It\u2019s highly contagious and often fatal.
