No one knows why.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When virologists took their first peek at XEC, the Covid-19 variant which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c1jddenj5p5o\">started to become dominant in the autumn of 2024<\/a>, the early signs were ominous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest descendant of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, XEC had&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2827145#:~:text=XEC%2C%20the%20up%2Dand%2D,1%20and%20KP.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arisen through recombination<\/a>, a process where two other variants had forged their genetic material together. Tests seemed to indicate that this would easily allow it to evade the immune protection offered by past infections or the latest iterations of the Covid-19 vaccines, based on the older JN.1 and KP.2 variants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The spike protein is quite different from previous variants, so it was quite easy to assume that XEC has the potential to evade immunity induced by JN.1 infection,&#8221; says Kei Sato, a virology professor at the University of Tokyo, who carried out one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/laninf\/article\/PIIS1473-3099(24)00731-X\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first studies<\/a>\u00a0of XEC, published in December 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20250113-why-covid-19-is-becoming-less-deadly\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BBC Covid-19 is now ubiquitous \u2013 but hospitalisations seem to be on a downward trajectory.
