{"id":8706,"date":"2025-02-11T17:03:07","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T23:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=8706"},"modified":"2025-02-11T17:03:11","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T23:03:11","slug":"house-cats-with-bird-flu-could-pose-a-risk-to-public-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2025\/02\/11\/house-cats-with-bird-flu-could-pose-a-risk-to-public-health\/","title":{"rendered":"House cats with bird flu could pose a risk to public health"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/house-cats-bird-flu-pose-risk-public-health\/story?id=118654264\">ABC News<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphis.usda.gov\/livestock-poultry-disease\/avian\/avian-influenza\/hpai-detections\/mammals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80 domestic cats<\/a>, among many other types of mammals, have been confirmed to have had bird flu since 2022 &#8212; generally barn cats that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/30\/7\/24-0508_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lived on dairy farms<\/a>, as well as feral cats and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/22221751.2024.2440498#d1e682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pets that spend time outdoors<\/a>&nbsp;and likely caught it by hunting diseased rodents or wild birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, a small but growing number of house cats have gotten sick from H5N1, the bird flu strain driving the current U.S. outbreak, after eating raw food or drinking unpasteurized milk. Some of those cats died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strain of bird flu currently circulating has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/single-mutation-h5n1-influenza-surface-protein-could-enable-easier-human-infection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not adapted<\/a>&nbsp;to efficiently spread among people.
