High Pathogenic Avian Influenza ripped through the southern elephant seal (<em>Mirounga leonina<\/em>)\u00a0colony on the Vald\u00e9s Peninsula in Argentina in 2023, killing almost all newborn pups and many adults. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/mms.70009\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"study, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0published recently in\u00a0<em>Marine Mammal Science<\/em>, researchers predicted how long it would take the population to recover. Estimates revealed it may take a century before numbers return to 2022 levels. \u201cAvian influenza has starkly demonstrated the devastating impact that infectious diseases can have on wildlife populations,\u201d said Marcela Uhart, director of the Latin America program at the University of California, Davis, and co-author of the study, in a press release. \u201cThese effects are likely to intensify under current and projected climate change conditions.
