More than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/04\/01\/hhs-senior-leaders-put-on-leave-nih\/\">20,000 jobs were eliminated<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/science\/2025\/03\/27\/trump-federal-grants-research-cuts\/\">billions of dollars<\/a>&nbsp;in federally funded scientific research has been threatened or paused, and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/04\/16\/hhs-budget-cut-trump\/\">budget draft<\/a>&nbsp;proposes a major restructuring of the Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kennedy, the HHS secretary, has stressed that the cuts and overhaul are necessary to refocus the federal government\u2019s public health mission on addressing chronic disease and a lagging life expectancy rate, eliminating redundancy, increasing transparency, and reducing government costs. As part of the \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d movement, the Trump administration has created a commission that \u201caims to end the childhood chronic disease epidemic.\u201d The Trump administration has also targeted funding cuts for grants that do not align with its ideological and political priorities.
