But the current administration has thrown that into uncertainty. For the first time since the COVID&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/vaccines-are-the-safest-health-hack\/\">vaccines<\/a>&nbsp;became available in pharmacies in 2021, the average person in the U.S. can\u2019t count on getting a free annual shot against a disease that has been the main or a contributing cause of death for more than 1.2 million people around the country, including nearly 12,000 to date this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCOVID\u2019s not done with us,\u201d says Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist at Brown University. \u201cWe have to keep using the tools that we have. It\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/five-years-after-the-covid-pandemic-began-fatigue-and-frustration-remain\/\">not like we get to forget about COVID<\/a>.\u201d In recent weeks, the Department of Health and Human Services, led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/recapping-rfk-jrs-first-day-of-confirmation-hearings-in-5-takeaways\/\">prominent antivaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.<\/a>, has announced a barrage of measures that are likely to reduce COVID vaccine access, leading to a swirl of confusion about what will be available for the 2025\u20132026 season.
