Known officially as XFG\u2014or informally as \u201cStratus\u201d\u2014it has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.who.int\/media\/docs\/default-source\/documents\/epp\/tracking-sars-cov-2\/25062025_xfg_ire.pdf?sfvrsn=260a9981_4&amp;download=true\">declared<\/a>&nbsp;a \u201cvariant under monitoring\u201d by the World Health Organization (WHO), and is expected to circulate alongside the now dominant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/who-monitors-new-covid-variant-nb181-spread-america-europe-nimbus\/\">Nimbus variant<\/a>&nbsp;throughout the northern hemisphere summer. The risk to public health is low, the WHO has said. Infections are characterized by a particular symptom: hoarseness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stratus is a combination of the LF.7 and LP.8.1.2 lineages of the virus, and when comparing Stratus to the previously dominant JN1 variant, \u201cdistinct mutational profiles in the spike protein can be identified,\u201d the WHO has said. \u201cSpike mutations at amino acids 478 and 487 enhance antibody avoidance\u201d\u2014meaning, in other words, the variant may be more adept at evading our immune defenses.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wired he World Health Organization has added the variant, known formally as XFG, to its monitoring list.
