Outbreaks of new types of infections and, yes, even pandemics are becoming increasingly likely, and we need to prepare for not only the next one but also its long-lasting physical and mental effects, experts said. \u201cThe reality is that pandemics are going to hit. They\u2019re going to hit again,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/generalmedicinegeriatrics.wustl.edu\/people\/ziyad-al-aly-md-fasn\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Ziyad Al-Aly, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ziyad Al-Aly<\/a>, a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis who researches long covid. \u201cIt\u2019s not a matter of if. It is a matter of when.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the pastfive years, covid has caused serious amounts of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2025\/03\/27\/long-covid-brain-cognition\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"chronic illness and disability, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chronic illness and disability<\/a>.
