Over the past 30 years, the largest area of job growth for biomedical PhDs has been in the private sector, with positions in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and other industries.
Currently, over 40% of the jobs for biomedical PhD graduates are in industry, and many of these jobs have business elements such as management, finance, marketing or intellectual property.
The Business for Bioscientists Certificate Program provides MS and PhD bioscience students with a fundamental background in business to enhance employment opportunities and success in industry, as well as in academia.
Students eligible for the Business for Bioscientists Certificate Program include PhD students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and MS students in the Biology Department at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).
Entry into either UNMC’s PhD program or UNO’s MS program requires a bachelor’s degree.
The only prerequisite for the program is prior coursework in statistics.
UNMC provides partial assistance with tuition if the business courses are placed on the students initial Program of Studies (a UNMC document which lists the coursework approved by the students PhD Supervisory Committee, that is usually completed in the second half of the first year). Current tuition rates can be found on the UNO website.
Interested students must contact the Graduate Studies office by May 1st.
