Teaching to Foster Meaningful Student Engagement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The importance of student engagement is clear. Engaged students show more persistence, effort, initiative and cognitive processing skills, which result in increased learning and satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply put, students learn best when actively and meaningfully engaged in the learning experience. Yet, despite the clear benefits, many students struggle to stay motivated and engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meaningful student engagement relies on a learning experience that taps into students\u2019 passions, purpose and interests while meeting their core psychological needs for competence, autonomy and relatedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This session will explore instructional and assessment strategies that promote student engagement, learning, satisfaction and community.<\/p>\n\n\n

B. Jean Mandernach, PhD<\/strong>
Executive Director, Center for Innovation in Research & Teaching
Grand Canyon University<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B. Jean Mandernach, Ph.D. is Executive Director of the Center for Innovation in Research and Teaching at Grand Canyon University. Her research focuses on enhancing student learning in the online classroom through innovative instructional and assessment strategies. She explores strategies for integrating efficient online instruction in a manner that maximizes student learning, satisfaction, and engagement. In addition, she has interests in the development of effective faculty evaluation models, perception of online degrees, data analytics, and faculty workload considerations. Jean is an active presenter and consultant in the field of online education and serves on various editorial boards including the Journal of Educators Online, eLearn Magazine, InSight: A Journal of Scholarly Teaching, and Journal of Instructional Research. In addition to authoring numerous journal articles and chapters, Jean served as co-editor on the book, Handbook of Research on Inclusive Development for Remote Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education, <\/em>and co-authored the book, Evaluating Online Teaching: Implementing Best Practices<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
