JON HALL: Hi. I'm Jon Hall, a nephrology fellow here at UNMC. Back when I was a resident in internal medicine, Dr. Rohlfsen and I had the opportunity to develop the Health Educators and Academic Leaders curriculum together. We realized that regardless of what role as part of the health care team you fill, you spend a significant amount of your time teaching, whether it's teaching patients, teaching peers, or teaching other learners. CORY ROHLFSEN: I'm Cory Rohlfsen. I'm the director of HEAL. The thing that makes me most proud of HEAL is that you can take someone who has no formal training in teaching, no idea what they might do as a clinician educator. So many different roles, so many opportunities, and they find their place, they find their strengths. They have a landing spot with support on a regional or national committee. Those opportunities are really, really hard to come by right out of residency or fellowship. And because of HEAL, that's being jump-started for a lot of people early in their careers. DEBRA WEKESA: Hi. My name is Debra Wekesa. I'm an internal medicine resident. I joined the HEAL program just because I knew I wanted to do academic medicine. And I knew I wanted to have a better foundation and understanding of how to do those things. CONOR DASS: My name is Conor Dass. I'm a medical education fellow with the Department of Emergency medicine. I joined HEAL last year, primarily for trying to make connections with other people interested in education. Medical education, we tend to be in silos within our own specialty. And HEAL was a good opportunity to meet other people across the institution who are interested in education, make those connections and collaborations with future projects. JOSE ZAMORA-SIFUENTES: My name is Jose Zamora-Sifuentes. I'm one of the allergy fellows here, second year. And the reason why I joined HEAL is because I believe that to be a doctor is to be a lifelong learner. And I think this give me an opportunity to continue fostering some skills that would allow for me to be a better teacher and also be alongside people who think similarly. MADELINE CLOONAN: My name is Madeline Cloonan. I am a third year general surgery resident. Yes, I would absolutely recommend the HEAL program to other residents. It's helped me get the foundation of how to do good education research and how to practice evidence-based education for my future career. MOHAMED ELILIWI: Hi. My name is Mohamed Eliliwi. I'm one of the pulmonary and critical care fellows here at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The HEAL curriculum equipped me with confidence not only to grow as a teacher, but also as a leader in academic medicine. The HEAL curriculum and this whole experience allowed me to secure a position as an assistant professor at a prestigious academic institution with protected time for teaching something that I'm very looking forward to. CORY ROHLFSEN: HEAL really helps you find not only your place in education, but also that community of peer support. And so we're really proud of how we bring people from unique backgrounds together for that common cause. So in order to get in contact with HEAL or have additional questions answered, you can reach out to me personally by email address listed on the website. There's a lot of information there, some additional testimonials. We have over 18 disciplines represented across GME, and we're expanding as well. [UPBEAT MUSIC]
