[AUDIO LOGO] DAVID WARREN: We have opportunities that exist in this facility that don't exist in many other places in the US or globally. And we have faculty that are excellent clinicians and also excellent teachers. And it's a great environment to learn and grow, and make decisions about where you want to take your career. TREVOR VAN SCHOONEVELD: Fellows who come here get fantastic clinical training and are prepared to practice in basically any environment they want to practice in. From academic medicine to private practice to subspecialty infectious disease, they're going to get the clinical experience they need here. ANUM ABBAS: They also get exposure to different experiences that are really unique to the ID fellowship at UNMC, like bio preparedness and a nationally-recognized antimicrobial stewardship program. I think these are the things that really make the UNMC ID fellowship stand out. STEPHEN COOPER: I specifically chose UNMC for infectious disease fellowship because of the access to the variety of patients that I would be exposed to, and that's through those specialty services that we have here, be it the orthopedic, oncology, or transplant services, in addition to just our general ID service. NICOLE KUSNIK: Sometimes when I'm working on general ID, it's just-- I shake my head. It's wild the amount of different cases that I can even see within a one-week period of time on one service, and that's really important when you're in a training program because you only have two years to learn as much as you can of infectious disease before you're out practicing on your own. CALVIN ALBRECHT: One of the main things that I've really found valuable about my training here is the supportive environment, including not only the attendings that I get to learn from, but also the pharmacist at round with each of our infectious disease teams, all of the nursing, pharmacy, and patient care supports in clinic, including in the HIV clinic, which has proved a really great asset to this program. TREVOR VAN SCHOONEVELD: We don't want our fellows doing only patient care. There needs to be time for those other activities. They need to have time to think, to process, to study, to research, to prepare educational materials, to do research projects. And my job as a program director is to really make sure we balance those. NICOLE KUSNIK: The culture here at UNMC is that of mentorship and learning. SUBJECT 1: You really need to have an ability to empathize and learn from your patients as well as your attendings. STEPHEN COOPER: You're also meeting patients who have odd exposures, and encounters, and new bacteria, and viruses, and being able to be on the front lines and diagnose those with the team as they're coming in is really exciting. SUBJECT 2: What I love most about being in infectious diseases at UNMC is really being at a state of the art facility and working alongside world leaders in all of these different areas of infectious disease. I get to care for incredibly immunocompromised, complex patients, which is my passion, and I get to do it while working beside really incredible people that are wonderful colleagues and friends. TREVOR VAN SCHOONEVELD: Omaha's a fantastic place to live. It's big, with lots of awesome opportunities, things to do, but it's not too big. NICOLE KUSNIK: I thought I was moving to the middle of a cornfield, and that's not the case here in Omaha. It is a lively city that has restaurants, and bars, and lots of extracurricular activities. CALVIN ALBRECHT: I can speak to my experience as someone who had never visited Omaha before coming here and being very pleasantly surprised with the amenities outside the hospital that the city has to offer. I have a membership to the zoo, which is number one in the nation, I have two children who we go to parks outside, splash pads, access to all sorts of public resources. We've really found a home here in Omaha and have really enjoyed our time in this city. DAVID WARREN: We have great faculty that are very invested in our Fellows really want to help them learn. We have a wonderful facility here. We have a wide variety of patients, so a lot of opportunities for learning. It's a great institution, it's a great facility, and it's a great environment to learn and grow and make decisions about where you want to take your career. [AUDIO LOGO]
