UNMC's CHF/Transplant Clinic is staffed by the only UNOS certified transplant cardiologists in the state of Nebraska and is the only center in Omaha offering heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices.

Congestive Heart Failure

CHF is a clinical syndrome where the heart becomes enlarged and fluid accumulates in the lungs, legs, and abdomen. Patients may feel short of breath upon lying down or with minimal exertion and may become easily fatigued. The latest treatments minimize the fluid accumulation and progression of the disease. Other therapies such as salt restriction and life-style changes are also important in the treatment of CHF. With the use of these therapies the patient clinically improves and feels better.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is a structured fitness program designed to help people with heart disease. A supervised program is encouraged for most patients with a heart condition. A specific protocol is designed for each individual patient by rehab specialists. CHF patients or patients that have received heart transplants especially benefit from cardiac rehab. Here they learn how to improve their daily functioning and exercise tolerance.
