Graduated Compression Stockings
  • A trial of graduated compression stockings found no difference in the prevalence of DVT for patients treated with stockings plus fondaparinux versus fondaparinux alone.
  • While mechanical compression may be of benefit for patients in whom anticoagulation cannot be administered (bleeding peptic ulcer, intracranial hemorrhage), routine use of graduated compression stockings is both costly and bothersome, and is not recommended for patients who can be treated with anticoagulation postoperatively.
