Mechanical Methods
Mechanical methods for prevention of VTE are primarily indicated in surgical patients at high risk of bleeding (patients with intracranial hemorrhage) and in whom there is a contraindication to anticoagulants (bleeding peptic ulcer). They are placed just prior to surgery and used continuously until discharge.
  • Examples are:
    • Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC)
    • Graduated compression stockings (GCS)
    • Venous foot pump (VFP)
