Geriatric Medicine Fellowship
Program faculty members are deeply invested in the success of each fellow and provide exceptional guidance in the clinical, academic, and research aspects of the fellowship in order to meet each individual’s goals.
Fellows provide patient care to a diverse population at various venues including: Nebraska Medicine Clinics, the Omaha VA Medical Center, and community based long term and skilled nursing facilities. The programs primary clinical teaching site is the Nebraska Medicine Geriatrics Clinic, which is a certified Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) that provides a truly interprofessional approach to patient care.
Fellows also receive training to promote leadership skills and academic development through a core curriculum and training experiences. In addition, a designated faculty member and the program coordinator assists each fellow in tailoring experiences based on the fellow’s future career goals.
Program Information
Our curriculum is based on the Geriatric Entrustable Professional Activities and Competencies. Training venues and activities are selected to provide fellows varied experiences in which to practice and learn the EPAs. Faculty support fellows in graduated levels of responsibility and use assessment instruments to structure evaluations of fellows and provide feedback.
Our program provides diverse interprofessional training environments and structured curricula.
Geriatrics is the classic team sport and essentially all training environments engage fellows in team care. For example, the outpatient continuity, consult, and comprehensive assessment clinics are conducted in our Geriatric PCMH and the home care experience is within the VA Home Based Primary Care program.
Our program fosters leadership skills:
- Fellows complete Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (STEPPS). The curriculum and experience in LTC contain leadership training for medical directors. Fellows receive training and complete projects using PDSA cycles for practice improvement in outpatient and long-term care settings.
Fellows also are provided a variety of opportunities to participate in research and writing.
Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application System. Applications, deadlines and regulations are available in full detail through the ERAS website and the NRMP website. Applicants with J1 visas may apply.
