The Thoracic Oncology Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is comprised of a comprehensive group of multidisciplinary experts. These health care providers and support personnel include medical oncologists, thoracic surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, pulmonologists, nurses, social workers, and nutritionists, all of whom have special interest and expertise in the field of thoracic oncology (cancers of the lung, pleura, esophagus, airways and mediastinum).
The mission of the Thoracic Oncology Program is to provide multidisciplinary state of the art treatment for all patients with thoracic malignancies. This includes comprehensive treatment planning, active involvement of support disciplines, extensive patient and family education, and the delivery of expert care. The program has a strong emphasis on research and members of this group actively collaborate with basic, clinical, and translational researchers at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. These collaborations develop novel strategies for the prevention and treatment of thoracic malignancies, identification of cancer risk factors, and addressing survivorship issues of this patient population.
UNMC and its hospital partner, Nebraska Medicine, are recognized as one of the leading institutions of this region for the healthcare expertise and services they provide. The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center in Nebraska and one of 65 NCI-designated centers in the country. This NCI designation is awarded to centers with demonstrated scientific excellence and the capability to integrate diverse research programs focused on cancer. The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is also a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), an alliance of 19 of the world’s top cancer centers that develop standards and set guidelines for treating patients with cancer.
The Thoracic Oncology Cancer Clinic is located at the Fred & Pamela Cancer Center. This area is specifically designed to allow smooth operation of these multidisciplinary clinics. In addition, patients are seen at the following locations:
