Mentoring in the Department of Internal Medicine is highly individualized; our Director meets with all newest faculty to assess their goals and plans for their early career. We believe that preparation and planning directly relate to more effective mentoring relationships. This ultimately leads to increased engagement and retention of our world class faculty. All Division leaders are actively involved in supporting mentees and their chosen mentors in dedicating time to these efforts. New faculty in the Department are paired with a mentor who meets with them at least monthly during their first year at UNMC. Mentoring of faculty is formally recognized as a teaching activity in the College of Medicine Promotion and Tenure guidelines.
The Department Faculty Mentoring Program is only one part of larger efforts across campus to increase visibility and effectiveness of mentoring.
