Simulators

SENSEI (Simulator for Ergonomics, Neuroscience, Safety Engineering and Innovation) is a large, high fidelity driving simulator. Developed with DriveSafety, it features a full-sized vehicle on a fixed-base and ultra high-definition wraparound visual displays that have higher resolution than the human retina. It provides the foundation for multidisciplinary research studies with collaborators across UNMC and the University of Nebraska system.

SENSEI was created to assess both normal and at-risk drivers in a controlled, perceptually complex setting using immersive, real-time virtual environments. A range of driving environments for clinical and research studies can be loaded into the simulator, including different roadway types, traffic conditions, signal controls, light and weather conditions.

While participants drive through scenarios the simulator collects quantitative variable about driving performance like steering wheel position, brake pedal position and time-to-collision. SENSEI permits research of high-risk scenarios and fatal driver errors without any physical risk to the study participants.

PARSEC (Performance Assessment and Rehabilitation Simulator for Embodies Cognition) was developed in collaboration with DriveSafety as an advanced clinical driving simulator and is housed in the Mind and Brain Health Labs.

PARSEC has a small footprint to fit within a typical exam room and provides a foundation for clinical driving investigation. PARSEC, while smaller than SENSEI, still has outstanding fidelity, face validity and research-oriented features.

It serves a wide variety of purposes including fitness-to-drive assessments, driving rehabilitation after injury or disease, and development of performance metrics across a wide variety of patient populations with conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Peripheral Neuropathy. PARSEC can also be used for research regarding driving behavior in a patient population.
