The interview process at UNMC begins with a dinner on a Wednesday evening at a local (and appetizing) restaurant with current MD-PhD scholars. No faculty allowed! Applicants are encouraged to get to know current program members and ask questions in this informal environment.
On Thursday, the applicant will be interviewed by faculty associated with the MD-PhD Scholars program. In addition to the six interviews with MD-PhD interview committee, the applicant will also meet with two faculty members, chosen by the applicant, whose research aligns with his/her research interests. The interview schedule generally begins at 8:00 a.m. and continues to 3:00 p.m., including lunch. The interviewee will attend the MD-PhD Scholars Thursday luncheon, where a speaker will present on a research topic. In the evening, applicants will attend a catered dinner at the MD/PhD’s director’s home, where the applicant can meet additional UNMC faculty and interact with current scholars.
On Friday, applicants will interview with the UNMC College of Medicine (COM). They will receive a guided tour of the campus’ facilities and have one interview with a faculty member on the COM interview committee. Lunch will be provided at the end of the interview. The activities generally last from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
On both Thursday and Friday, it is also possible that a current student could conduct (or be a part of) an interview.
Travel Arrangement Information
Travel accommodations are the applicant’s responsibility. This includes travel to and from Omaha, travel within Omaha, and a place to stay during the interview. When the applicant is accepted for an interview, an email will be sent out shortly after to share contact information of current MD/PhD Scholars who may be willing to host a student during their interview stay. Housing arrangements are the interviewee’s responsibility to initiate and coordinate.
Most meals will be provided by the program. Wednesday dinner, Thursday lunch and dinner, and Friday lunch will all be covered.
