Pediatric Physical Therapy Residency

Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) is a federally-designated University Center of Excellence for Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service. MMI specializes in providing services and support for persons with intellectual, developmental and/or genetic disorders through interdisciplinary clinics, outreach activities, and both center and community-based programs. Nestled in mid-town Omaha, a metropolitan area of approximately  880,000, MMI is a part of the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

The MMI physical therapy department consists of highly qualified physical therapists,who are either certified as American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) Pediatric Clinical Specialists or Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) Assistive Technology Professionals. The department provides educationally related PT services to more than 1,000 children in the Omaha and Bellevue school districts. The department also provides outpatient and home-based PT services and services to NICU patients at the Nebraska Medical Center/ Nebraska Methodist Women’s Hospital. Multidisciplinary clinics that involve PT consultation include: Muscular Dystrophy Association clinics for children and adults diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, Tracking Infant Progress Statewide (TIPS) NICU follow-up clinic, and children or adults who are in need of adaptive equipment. MMI partners with Children's Hospital and Medical Center (CHMC) for comprehensive coverage of pediatric diagnostic categories and practice settings. Residents spend seven weeks practicing in the acute care setting at CHMC.

In addition to clinical services, MMI is responsible for entry-level pediatric curricular content and instruction through UNMC College of Allied Health Professions, Division of Physical Therapy Education and graduate coursework in Rehabilitation Sciences through the UNMC Medical Sciences Interdepartmental Area. Three core faculty members provide instruction for Clinical Doctoral PT students and graduate students:
